Sleeping With Shepherds

Last night, we took out the nativity creche.  The kids wanted to take turns holding each little figure as it came out.  Then they would set them down on the rug so that they formed a little semicircle.  They kept this up until the shepherd came out.  And then, for some reason he couldn't explain, Cody grabbed onto the shepherd pictured here and would not let go.  (It wasn't the staff, he took that out right away.)

He cried when we tried to put him on the mantel with the rest of the scene and, when we gave in and let him hold the shepherd again, he announced that he was running away with the shepherd and taking him to bed.  No amount of promises, attempted bait-and-switches, or cajoling would get Cody to let the shepherd go.  He fell asleep with it laid right over his chest, and when he woke to find we'd spirited it away in the night, he was despondent.  He sat under the mantel, staring at the figurine, and waited for me to let him hold the shepherd again. You should have heard him when he found out he would not be allowed to take the shepherd to school, in spite of his insistence that he would keep his little friend in his cubby.

So today I started searching for a stuffed nativity.  Why don't they make those?
