I was searching through my Picasa archive, trying to find a photo of my mom and I for my most recent post, and I noticed something: I looked great in all the photos taken before 2006. In most of the pictures from the last four years, though, I looked like my brother. My brother's a handsome guy, but he's also, you know...a guy."What happened in 2006?" I wondered, frantically clicking through the images. I couldn't blame the kids for this one; they were born in 2007. I was shocked when I realized what separated the cute from the not-so-cute versions of me: it was eye makeup!
A few months after our honeymoon, S. sent me to motorcycle racing school, and I swapped in Red, my 1976 BMW R 75/6 for Miho, a superfast Japanese naked bike. Mascara made my eyelashes brush against the screen of my helmet, and eyeliner just wouldn't work on the tear-inducing speeds Miho urged me to. Out went the bewitching eyes, in came...my brother's eyes. (Come to think of it, this is when S. mentioned that I seemed to be letting myself go!)
A year or so later I had two babies, and there was no shot I was going to wear eye makeup. On those rare occasions when I had 5 minutes to spend on self-care, I wanted something that would deliver maximum pop for minimum time investment, and that meant lipstick. Entropy begat more entropy, until one morning I woke up and realized that every photo of me for the last 4 years has been crap.
A state of beauty emergency has been declared and a major turnaround is already underway. I have enlisted powerful proven players to right the ship: Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Tender Chic, Guerlain Terracotta Loose Powder Kohl Liner, and Dior Diorshow Iconic Extreme Waterproof Mascara.
Today is Day 5 of a 30-day eye makeup program. Here's how we're doing so far:
Day 1: Husband tells me I'm looking hot, and that he can see I've been taking care of myself.
Day 3: Sister imitates my eye makeup. Flight attendant asks me out. Seatmate asks whether I'm a student.
Day 5: Husband says I look pretty.
Immediate results! That's what I'm talking about! I'll report back at the end of the 30 days, and I hope that by then, doing my eye makeup will be established as a daily necessity.
