The Important Thing

The other night I was reading to Liv from The Jesus Storybook Bible about how the kingdom of God is like buried treasure.  Cody had dropped off to sleep, as usual, as soon as he was tucked in, and I stayed in the rocking chair with a clip-on lamp, taking story requests from Liv.  She was confused by the part about selling everything you own and then using the money to buy the field where the treasure lies.

"Why do we buy God?" she asked.

No, no, I explained, we don't buy God.  The parable is saying that God is the most important thing, more important than anything else we can have.

"More important than anything?" she asked.

"Uh-huh."

"Oh.  So next time you say 'The important thing right now is to wash the dishes,' I can say 'No, the important thing is God?'"

I smiled to myself in the dark and said yes.
